The Burr Arch has a large wooden arch added to a Multiple
Kingpost to make the bridge stiffer. The ends were embedded in the abutments on both
sides of the bridge. This greatly increased the strength and the stiffness of the
bridge. This system made it possible for covered bridges to be as long as 250 feet
without immediate supports. The Barrackville and the
Carrollton are examples. The Philippi bridge design is
similar to the Burr Arch but its truss is the Long rather than the Multiple Kingpost.
Multiple Kingpost
The Multiple Kingpost was a Kingpost Truss changed by adding more triangles to the truss
design. The design allowed spans to reach 80 feet instead of 40 feet. The Fletcher and the Simpson Creek covered
bridges are examples of this truss design.
