Long, Howe,Warren Double

Long
The Long Truss was named for its designer, Stephen Long.  Long's design was very popular and was  used by several builders.  The Long truss allowed spans to reach 100 feet.  There are six covered bridges in West Virginia with this truss, they are:  the Philippi, Hokes Mill, Sarvis Fork, Staats Mill, Center Point and the Indian Creek.

Howe Truss Howe
The Howe truss was introduced into bridge construction in the 1840's.  The vertical rods were constructed of metal.  The Milton/Mud River bridge in Cabell County is an example of a Howe Truss bridge.

Warren Double
The Warren Truss was patented by two Englishmen, James Warren and T.W. Morzani in 1838.   It is similar to the Howe Truss except for the vertical beams.  The Locust Creek bridge is the only example in West Virginia of a modified Warren Double truss.
